The city of Cumberland takes up what would have been the northwest corner of the town, at the southeast end of Beaver Dam Lake. The easternmost end of the lake extends into the town of Cumberland. The lake is the source of the Hay River, which flows south across Cumberland into the town of Clinton on its way to the Red Cedar River. Wisconsin Highway 48 runs across the northern part of the town, connecting the city of Cumberland to the west with Rice Lake to the east. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Cumberland has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2.88%, is water.〔
